For the International Museum Day the Austrian Military Museum is offering free admission all day and an exciting program for kids. Like every year, the museum education team of the Museum of Military History has thought out something special for its young visitors (6 to 14 years).  From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. children are invited to be part of our Horse festival, where they can attempt archery, try out lasso throwing and learn a lot about horses in military history. Only if you are fit to clear up the panel game, you are allowed to ride on a real horse. At our Tombola we raffle a horse carriage for four persons. The second winner will check out a horse training lesson.

Art museum “Boris Denev”, Veliko Tarnovo

Exhibition “Thirty Bulgarian Classical Paintings”

“Thirty Bulgarian Classical Paintings” is an exhibition chosen from the National Art Museum collection. It was shown in Brussels in honour of Bulgarian National holiday – 3-th of March. It comprises 30 classical paintings by Bulgarian artists from all over the country, who worked in 30-es and 40-es of the last century. What is interesting is not only the diversity of subjects but also the way that artists deal with. Artists like Vladimir Dimitrov the Master, Nicola Tanev, David Perets, Sirak Skitnik, Nenko Balkanski, Cyril Tsonev develop different themes using great variety of plastic devices – from bright, sonorous expressiveness to clear flat-decorative quality of painting. The collection is very inspiring with its sophistication, fine delicacy and interest of people that surround it.

Plovdiv Regional Historical Museum, Plovdiv

On the 18th of May 2012, on the occasion of the 35th International Museum Day, the exhibition “Time Geometry – Practices in Public Environment” will be opened in the Regional History Museum – Plovdiv.

Aiming to shed more light on the experimental use of the public space, in the halls of the museum will be presented video documentations of performances and artistic actions in public space by international artists who are interested mostly in working in an active social environment and in the interactions with people.

The exhibition will examine different artistic positions and practices in the most extensive network of realities that the contemporary society generates by focusing on the identification of these kinds of practices in the public context and their localization within the system of contemporary art. Are they attractive and communicative enough? What is the goal of the artistic interventions? Do they provoke any substantial change into the society?

Presented in the spaces of the museum the show will provide an opportunity for a logical connection of heredity in education to be established that will increase the public interest in the activities of the museum and will emphasize its mission to preserve the tangible and the intangible values as evidences of humanity. It will make visible the relation of those values to the particular environment and broader social field, where they are developed and which they actively transform.

The exhibition offers also new insights and interpretation of the museum activities, by bringing in its halls not only new selection of works and documentations, but also rather new objectives and audience. The need for social development of the museum brings the institutions and the artists together, allowing the museums in general to be considered not only as witnesses and guardians of the past and of the values of humanity, society and the individual, but also as an adequate platform and a partner in the reflection upon the processes in the contemporary society.

National Anthropological Museum – Institute of Experimental Morphology, Pathology and Anthropology with museum, Sofia

Guided tours, documentary film, free entrance.

Anthropological studies in Bulgaria were undertaken for the first time in the last decades of the 19th century, on the basis of the population living in the country and of the bone material initially obtained from monastery and church ossuaries and subsequently supplied by archaeological excavations.
Anthropological investigations of the Bulgarian population and the peoples who used to inhabit the present Bulgarian territories in the past have rendered information about their anthropological types and have supplied evidence about their health and pathology.
Known to a limited circle of experts, these results have not been made widely familiar to the general public.
Thus the National Anthropological Museum in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was assigned the task of responding to this need and of promoting the spread of anthropological knowledge.
Arranged in a chronological order from the Neolithic till the National Revival, against the historical and cultural backdrop and the background of religious concepts obtaining during the different epochs, the exposition presents the physical types of the people, along with information on the diseases and injuries which had left imprints on their bones, and marks remaining from therapeutic and ritual practices.
A number of images from different epochs have been rendered visual by the method of plastic anthropological reconstruction of the head by the skull.

The Vejen Art Museum, Vejen, Denmark

Friday the 18th of May The Vejen Art Museum, Vejen, Denmark will be celebrating the international Museum day with a lecture 2-4 pm by the director, Teresa Nielsen, about the present exhibtion of the work of the painter Axel Hou (1860-1948). The exhibition illustrates the importance of the internet in relation to research. Without the internet we would never have had the important contacts from Denmark to Kassel in Germany where we got into contact with the heirs of one of the artist’s benefactors. Another e-mail connected us to the artist’s relatives who moved to Canada to generations back. The exhibition is largely built up of artwork on loan from private collections – and most contacts have been made over the internet. Admission free.

Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic PostBank, Costa Navarino, Messenia

Navarino Natura Hall by Hellenic Postbank provides a unique insight into the rich and diverse environment of Messenia, with interactive features to let visitors ‘experience’ the Messenian flora and fauna and inspirational content that also highlights Costa Navarino’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The centre allows visitors, university students, local schools and the public to familiarize themselves with environmental protection issues. It is also committed to encouraging participation in the global effort to tackle climate change, while presenting the results of the research programs being carried out at Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO).

The centre is the result of a collaboration between the University of Stockholm, the Academy of Athens, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (the Greek counterpart of the RSPB), the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) and Navarino Foundation, with the support of the Hellenic Postbank, and was designed by the NGO Organization Earth and the company K&G.

Activities organized for IMD 2012:

Natura Hall, as an environmental exhibition and information centre, underlines its dedication to education, environment and art by the implementation of the specially designed Educational Activity “Knowing and Promoting the Nature and the History of Messenia” addressed to students of local schools of 11-12 years old.

The educational activity was designed by the University of Peloponnese together with relevant educational material & kits and it has been running since February 2012 with an average participation of 120 children per week.
The International Museum Day offers the opportunity to organize two guided tours in the Navarino Natura Hall open to all resort’s guests.

Furthermore, the final educational activity for the current school year 2011-2012 will take place with a special group of children: the NGO ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ will participate in the educational activity in the museum and have the chance to know all about the local nature, as well as climatic change and environmental principles. In addition, the Navarino Outdoors will organize a special bike tour to Gialova Lagoon – NATURA 2000 for the young visitors to rediscover in situ all the information they will receive during the educational activity in the museum.

Museu do Falso, Viseu

Inauguration of the Museum do Falso on International Museum day 2012

The Museum of Fake is a city history museum, made exclusively from contributions by contemporary cultural agents, working under the premise of “Simulacrum”: What if a given event occurred differently from what it did? Thus constructing “documents” that may represent that “time warp”. By representing “falsehoods”, the interaction with the real events and the city that sustains the events will ultimately come as a notion of everyday choice, by any citizen.

The Museum will serve as a hub for other historical landmarks, museums, publications, infra-structures, institutions, etc. On the 18th of May 2012, the Museum with its first set of pieces (the founding pieces) will be open to the public at 14:30h, having a more formal ceremony at 18h, with the presence of all the authors and the presentation of the Museum’s catalog.

This exhibition pays tribute to these masters, who played a major role in defining the development of independent Russian art for decades. Items on display will include paintings and graphics, both from the NCAA collection and artists’ studios, which create a rather complete vision of their art. Works by Viktor Pivovarov, Igor Shelkovsky and Eduard Shteinberg exhibit the main vectors of development of contemporary art that took shape in the 1970s and, to this day, continue plaing the role of coordinates in the space of Russian art culture.
